Small
Business Sentiment Survey
, conducted by Yodle which
recently asked 306 small business owners nationwide for their perspectives on a
variety of topics, and found some interesting results when it comes to SMBs and
technology.
According to the
results Small Business Owners:
- 52% still don’t have a website
- 50+% don’t measure the results of their marketing programs
- 51% use some type of accounting operations technology
- 39% use appointment booking and scheduling
- 34% use customer relationship management (CRM)
- 25% point-of-sale systems
- 14% acquisition marketing
SMB owners
have many and varied concerns:
The top three professional worries are:
- 42% finding new customers
- 39% affording healthcare and other employee benefits
- 33% keeping current customers
SMB owners manage to work and play:
- 52% of SMB owners work 40 hours or less
- 72% take at least two weeks of vacation per year
Here’s what the SBA has to say about the part small
businesses play in the American economy:
- The 23 million small businesses in America account for 54% of all U.S. sales.
- Small businesses provide 55% of all jobs and 66% of all net new jobs since the 1970s.
This question was asked of consumers: “Do You Read Online Customer
Reviews To Determine Whether A Local Business Is A Good Business?
- 85% of consumers say that they read online reviews for local businesses (up from 76% in 2012)
- 89% of consumers use search engines (i.e. Google, Yahoo, and Bing) for purchase decisions per “Brafton -Fuel your brand”
Where is the
disconnect? Why are small business owners not using low cost (in many cases
free), readily available technology to better establish and grow their
businesses? As shown
above, when many buyers are looking for a local business to deal with – from a
handyman to a florist, a restaurant to a seamstress – the first place they look
is online. If they find the store or restaurant or service provider
does not have a website; or has one that clearly has not been updated since
2003; or does not provide an email address or phone number on the home page – they
discount it immediately. They assume (rightly or wrongly) that the business
is unprofessional and low quality.
